Let me first give you some background, I became a client of Tony Demartile (co-owner and director) as an insecure pre-teen. I walked into our local town hair shop full of insecurities about my horribly frizzy and coarse hair, expecting absolutely nothing. There wasn’t a hair stylist around that could do anything with my hair, including the owner of the shop. My mother and I had tried trendy upscale salons, grandmom hair shops and Salons specializing in “ethnic” hair types. We finally gave up giving in to the local spot and a scrunchy… until Tony (still in High School himself at that time). I still remember my mother pulling up to get me and seeing her mouth drop open for a good few minutes, she had never seen my horrible hair look so good either.

Since then I have strayed a few times, once because I was living in NY, once because I was being cheap and tried to go the cheap route and once because I decided to try a snooty SF salon that had been featured in Allure magazine. I can tell you that each and every time I have ended up scurrying back to Sole, promising myself never to stray again. Mainly because even now, years later Tony is still the only person that knows what to do with my hair.

Now I will be the first to admit, I cannot afford Tony and out of his clientele I am probably on the lower end of the income scale but he is worth every single penny he charges and more. He is a hair artist, not just a stylist and I have yet to leave his salon feeling anything less than fabulous. I can go to him and say: “do whatever you want” or bring a photo and say “I want this” and I know Tony will not disappoint. He always provides honest feedback and direction and he has yet to be wrong about anything concerning my hair.

In addition to his talent, it is so nice to hang out with him and shoot the breeze while he designs my hair. He is pleasant and kind and nice to talk with. His salon showcases beautiful pieces of artwork and has such a relaxing ambiance. The other members of his team are equally pleasant and from what I have seen pretty talented as well.

I highly recommend this salon and specifically, Tony.

If I could give them 10 stars I would!!!

Tony and Guy and the rest of the gang make you feel like you’re the only person in the room from the moment you walk in until you leave. I’ve gone there in a bad mood and left feeling all giggly, inside and out.

I started going here a few years ago. I hadn’t been living in the bay area for long and was desperately trying to find a stylist I could trust. The thing I love most is that I sit down in the chair with Tony and say something along the lines of “Oh, I don’t know, just shorten it.” And from that, Tony pulls out a masterpiece. Luckily tho, he knows I’m no whiz with a blow dryer so he makes my hair dummy proof.

If that weren’t enough, they sell Aveda products so every time I go in I end up buying at least one lip gloss and hair product. They never push products tho. Something I typically loathe about hair salons. They tell you what they used on you but without the evil glare and pressure.

I’m sure some people may think it’s a little pricey but it’s SOOOOO worth every single penny. Besides, everybody needs some good ol’ fashioned pampering once and a while.

I could go on and on, but I’ll spare you. Just go, check it out and send your old stylist a farewell card.

I went to see Tony at Sole after going to a great salon in the city for 3 years. I was hoping to find something in the East Bay, but I was resistant and thought I couldn’t find as great a place that wasn’t in the city. My husband went to Sole twice, and he said it was great. Even though his hair looked wonderful, I still resisted, thinking my hair needed something different than his. Then, one day, after calling my previous salon and being frustrated at the limited times to get in, I called Sole.

I love my new haircut. I went in and said “what would you do if I let you do anything?” Tony gave me a great new shorter cut that is very flattering and received lots of compliments.

I’m going back for a second time this week. See you Weds, Tony!

So… I want to publicly thank Tony and everyone at “Sole” for accomodating me after a hair cut went south. I’m not one for freebees so when Tony offered to cut my hair for free I still wanted to pay (and did cause he’s amazing). I love great service because I work in the industry and feel I give it. I wish the best for Sole Salon. You guys rock!!!

Girls and guys please… Do yourself a favour and get your hair done. It will only make your outlook on life brighter.

I just tried Sole based on its yelp rating and boy was I impressed! Ever since I was little I’ve had straight hair and of course dreamed of curls. I tried all the god forbidden perms of the late 80’s leaving me looking like crusty the clown. I stopped resisting and accepted my straight hair and learned to love it.

But after a fabulous cut Tony started to style it and said “hey why don’t we try to find some wave in your hair” And I laughed “good luck! Ive dreamed of wave my entire life” Well he found it! HE FOUND WAVE!!! With Avedas curl gel I have body and texture and curl.

I work in an office full of men. Being the only female topics such as hair never seem to arise. But my hair was the topic of the day with all the guys! Every single one of them actually noticed my new hairdo and said how much they like it! Many of them felt the need to say in multiple times during they day like they were in shock of how different I look. That in it of itself says a lot because of course men don’t notice hair! And 2 of them (at different times) told me how it shows my fun personality a lot more than my old cut! Thanks Tony! You have sold me as a new client for certain! I feel so flirty now! Maybe now I’ll actually get a damn date! heh

I have been getting my hair cut and colored by the owner, Tony, for many years. He is fantastic as well. I now have my cut and color by Tony and my brow waxes done by Carmen…on the perfect day….Tony washes my hair, Carmen waxes my brows and Tony finishes me off with a lovely, cut and such fabulous color people are always complimenting me and asking who does my hair. SOLE SALON is a sanctuary and is like an oasis on Bay Street. When you are in the salon, the outside world seems miles away.

A great place. I recommend it without reservation!

I have been going to Sole for years and years. I discovered it quite by accident and have never looked back. The atmosphere is fantastic and the people make it the best salon in the city. They care about you and won’t to make sure you love what they do. Tony is amazing and I feel really lucky to have the very best hairdresser!
I have also been to Tracy once (when Tony was on a cruise) and she did an excellent job. I would highly recommend her and all the stylists.

It’s time for me to come out of the closet with this — I don’t just get my hair cut, I get a fantastic cut every time I see Tony (the owner) at Sole salon. He’s awesome. I’ve been told that my “occipittal” makes my head difficult to work with – & that;s probably why my hair used to always look so – gay. So now I’ve been seeing Tony & my hair has never looked better! My girlfriend has been getting cuts/color there for years – & has seen lots of changes. She’s totally a Tony-addict. She’s frickin’ in love with the guy. Fortunately for me, he & his partner are running the place together, so I don’t think I’ll have any trouble there. My hair has never looked better. The experience is always wonderful — might I even say pampering? Yes. I might. And I just plain like the folks there. They’re a good group of people & it’s nice to be a regular there. Feels like a family run business.

I have been going here for over 4 years and have never had a bad cut or color. Tony really cuts hair well. I even convinced my husband to upgrade from the barber and he has been happy with his hair cuts also.

Everyone is friendly and professional.
