This was my first time at a salon, and I was like a deer in headlights, trying not to do anything “uncool” that would disturb the hipster atmosphere. I went with Nathalie after having a consultation with her, because I needed someone who knew how to work with hair like mine (very thick, very coarse, very curly). I didn’t have the slightest idea what I wanted to do with my hair, I just knew I needed a more defined style with some highlights. I failed to find any pictures for Nathalie to refer to on the day of my appointment, but she still churned out what I think is a great haircut. The color I chose turned out to be pretty subtle, but still looks really good. I would totally recommend this salon to anyone who’s a virgin in this area. Everyone there is very nice, very friendly, and helpful, and no one pushes products on you.

Yay! Sole!
I’ve been here twice now, both times with Nathalie. Was a little scared at first, being a salon virgin (I used to have really long down-past-the-ass hair and never bothered with the salon), but she made me feel at ease and listened to my vague requirements (easy to manage, nothing too crazy, maybe about this length). She ended up giving me a fun shoulder length cut that still had long semi-conservative layers. I got compliments about it for weeks and weeks and weeks, and it grew out really well.
The second time, I wanted something more drastic. I’ve always wanted to go short but seeing as lopping so much off is so irreversible, I’ve always been scared to let anyone touch me like that. It turned out great! I’ve been extremely happy with my cut both times. Bonus points for complimentary tea while you’re waiting. And ohhhhhh, the scalp massage. I could lie there and never wake up.
The awesome thing about this place is it’s actually very affordable, and not pretentious and snooty like you’d expect salons to be. I may get some color next time

I love this place! Hair has always been tough for me.. I never learned how to style it, and I still don’t own a hair dryer… yes I am seriously, sadly challenged in making my head area look decent.
Virtually every salon I tried in Berkeley I got something sort of resembling what I wanted, but not quite right. Here, I felt welcome, comfortable, and totally in good hands. They’re so friendly here and it’s warm, inviting and pleasant.
Nathalie brought me tea, enthusiastically discussed my ideas and my hair and then created a masterpiece. I am in awe. I never thought my hair could actually look good on my head! Nathalie is wonderful and very good at what she does.

Nathalie is the best! I saw her for over two years and always emerged looking awesome. Her cuts were easy to style and grew out well. I have fine, thin hair, but I’ve referred multiple friends of all hair types and all of them love her.
I moved to New York and haven’t been able to find anyone who compares to Nathalie for even twice what it cost to visit her. I may have to fly to Oakland to get great hair.

I’m actually about to leave a great review for a hair salon.. I can’t believe it. Someone, roll out the trumpets and release some doves!
OK, I have diabolically bad luck when it comes to getting my hair cut – so I fly to NYC (from CA) to get my hair cut every few months from Chiu at NYC’s Downtown Vidal Sassoon. He’s truly incredible.. ANYWAY: I went to Sole for color, deciding that an Aveda Salon had to be a safe bet for color, and I’ve always heard good things about the Aveda brand color.
I’m brunette, very dark brunette, going to get color for the first time to cover some greys, pretty tough to mess up. I wasn’t expecting to be wowed.
I was wowed.
Nathalie was my colorist, and from the moment I sat down I knew I was in expert hands. She was friendly, cheerful, extremely knowledgeable, and explained everything she was going to do and why, putting me at ease, making me feel completely confident in her abilities and experience.
The Aveda product is worth mentioning too – no harsh chemical smells of any kind, their permanent hair color is clearly superior. I have uber sensitive skin too and had zero reaction. After a wash and blow dry, I was absolutely thrilled: I got exactly what I wanted, my own color (based on the color of my roots, as my ends were a little dry and damaged), no greys. Somehow this single process color is multi-tonal and dimensional (not at all flat), my hair looks refreshed, vibrant, totally natural – it’s me only better!
Nathalie also gave me a bang trim, she did a stellar job. I am completely happy.
While I was having my color done, a young woman next to me was having her hair cut by Tanya. I’ll say she did a fantastic job – I would even consider giving Sole a chance at cutting my locks… In the meantime I am definitely sending my best friend in for it.
I would absolutely recommend Sole above any other place I’ve been to thus far in the Bay Area. The location at Bay St had me a little nervous, but the decor is lovely, it’s immaculate, smells wonderful, the staff is genuinely friendly and polite, cheerful, professional, and attentive. At no time did anyone get pushy and try and sell me any products (a pet peeve of mine), but I actually want whatever they used on my hair because it was so soft and luxurious when I left!
I will definitely be back!
(My 4 star rating is because I only got color, and have not had a cut at Sole. If I do go for a cut and it’s a success I will update this to 5 starts for sure!)

I love working with Nathalie. I’m not super-precious with my hair, but I still need to look professional. Completely at-odds with that requirement is that I also like to try interesting things. Nathalie is really confident in her ideas and abilities and isn’t afraid to work with me to try something new. Rather than force me to describe down to the last detail what I want, we talk it through and generally adapt the original concept.
Her color work is great, her cuts are always lovely. My only wish is that I could squeeze in more appointments to keep my style looking fresher.

Nathalie does a great job with my super curly hair! I never get my hair cut by anyone else… she understands curls so well (first hand!) and gives a great scalp massage!
